Sleep deprived

November 20, 2013

Last night I decided that it really made sense to stay up till 2pm catching up on episodes of the Mindy Project. While that show has grown on my significantly, I still feel that wasn’t the best decision on my part. I have always had strong night owl tendencies. If left entirely to my own devices, I would probably choose to stay up till midnight every night and sleep in till 9am. Alas, that isn’t really practical for other desire to have a stable job and all of the perks that come with that.

But basically that has been one paragraph of lead up to tell you, once again you are getting no real blog post. So here is is this photo Jess took of Alex and I this summer and I like it.

Alex and I after the Bender wedding on Saturday, exhausted, but happy. What a wonderful day!

November 19, 2013

The past two evenings have been fuller than I was originally anticipating and tomorrow evening is already full with fun plans (yay! Pathfinder!). Which means I need to both finish the secret project AND write a blog post AND finish baking the brownies for a co-workers goodbye party tomorrow. So let’s play a little catch-up!

Monday, two of my co-workers and I got the brilliant idea that we should go boot shopping at DSW after work. Which meant I got to spend the afternoon talking about going to the mall and making lots of high school jokes. I meant to go shopping for winter friendly work friendly comfortable stylish shoes. But instead I found these two pairs on the clearance rack. The one on the right is a Tom knock-off by a brand called Cloud. It has a felt wool dark mossy green upper with a nice cushy footbed. I wore them all today and liked them quite a lot. The pair on the left are Dr. Scholls and represent my 3rd attempt to find comfortable casual/yet dressy brown flats. And it is still a bit early, but I think we may have a winner. With a comfortable foot bed with some actual support and a simple, yet elegant design, I am excited to give these a go.

I bought new shoes!

So that was last night’s adventure. Tonight after work, I took advantage of some free movie passes that my work place mysteriously got in the mail and went to see Delivery Man with Vince Vaughn. While I think it helped that I went in with very low expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised. Instead of being an over the top raunchy comedy, Vaughn played more of a straight man and honestly seemed to wrestle with some real issues regarding being and adult and becoming a father. If it ends up on Netflix I think I can honestly recommend it for a good evening’s entertainment. Plus Robin from How I Met Your Mother and Andy from Parks and Rec are in it, which is two strikes in its favor.

Also in looking up that trailer, I discovered that this movie is apparently an almost frame for frame remake of a french movie called Starbuck. Seriously every seen in that trailer is identical to the movie I just saw. Hollywood is weird….

Okay, I was planning on taking more time to blog tonight, but it turns out there was a hidden question on the secret project. So now I need to go and answer that……blerg

Closing down another weekend

November 17, 2013

Leaf and candle reflections
I had some lofty goals for this weekend, things like laundry, cleaning the apartment, working on a real (as in thought out and maybe even edited) blog post, but alas very few of those things happened. Instead I did things like go to Costco with Alex and purchase a membership (and lots of delicious produce – I like the goal of eating two heads of lettuce this week!) and go to a lovely farewell potluck on Saturday night which included some much needed friend time. Speaking of delicious food, I also got to enjoy a delicious salmon meal at Alex’s church that was celebrating the end of their successful fall pledge drive. Mmmmmm Norwegian Lutherans know how to BBQ a salmon!

Those were some of the weekend highlights, but the weekend also included a nagging patch of allergies which included me feeling just kind of out of sorts for much of the days and taking a 2 hour nap this afternoon! Apparently my new attempt at allergy medicine (generic brand from Costco = cheap drugs!) kind of fogs me up a bit, so I think I will need to try to adjust to taking it in the evening and not the mornings. Also I spent a fair amount of time this weekend working on the secret project. Which in reality isn’t that secret, just something I don’t want to post about. So if you are interested, feel free to email me. But let’s just say it is exciting, kind of terrifying and also all about writing and revising things I don’t like to work on. However, progress was made and if all goes as planned, I should be completed by tomorrow evening. With that, I am off to refill my tea, work a bit more and then get off to bed.

for Katie

November 16, 2013

Tonight at a farewell for the pastor at our church the Emcee had a lovely British accent that reminded me of Neil Gaiman. When I shared this with Katie, it was discovered that she had never heard Neil speak, which means she had never watched this video.

So while yes it is long (around 20 minutes) this is a great video about the importance of creating, making art and forging the kind of life you want to lead. I guarantee you won’t regret watching it.

How to have a delightful Friday night

November 15, 2013

1. Get out of work a little early because of late nights earlier in the week.

2. Putz around the apartment, accomplishing very little.

3. Go and pick Alex up from the car mechanic, because the check engine light came on his car (the second time in a month!).

4. Discover that Alex owns a massage chair insert thing (it fits on top of a pre-existing chair) and spend the next 30 minutes blissed out on massage, while working on a secret project.

5. Go out to dinner and eat a delicious steak salad.

6. Talk about all sorts of things with Alex, including everything from elder care, children and alcohol.

7. Complete the dinner & a movie twofer with the new Thor movie.

8. Laugh a lot, mainly in the second half or when Loki was involved. And especially for the very brief Captain America cameo and the great Easter Eggs at the end (both of them!)

Throwback Thursday

Gah! Cat!

Back story: My former housemate, Anne, ended up adopting an adorable family of kittens and during my fly-by visit back to Chicago in Spring of 2012 I got to stop by and see how they were growing up. Here are few more:

I swear I had a topic right on the tip of my tongue

November 13, 2013

I have actually been thinking of a few things that I could blog about here that would be slightly more in depth then “oh HAI, here is post thing!”. They are as follow:

– The conundrum of the last name (as in what you do when you decide to partner up with someone for life and need a way to acknowledge that)

– The wedding of Katie and Bryan this summer in which I took pictures

– The Girls Weekend Re-cap (all the way back in May!)

– Thoughts about big things that I can’t really blog about because they are private (at least right now) but are connected to this great quote I found in my blog drafts from the last time I had a big decision to mull over:

Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.”
– Anais Nin (via SwissMiss)

But alas, the concept of working a 9-5 job with commute, means productivity past 8pm seems like a really crazy idea. Perhaps this weekend I will put some time into actually writing about one of those topics or something else that appeals to me.

Either way, have a good night!

Home from work past 9pm….

November 11, 2013

….means photo post!

Although what kept me out late was in fact a very fun work-related free delicious dinner at Cafe Flora, so I am not really complaining. Just tired and ready for bed. So here you go, a photo of the deconstructed pumpkin paneer curry I had for dinner. Very tasty, although not pictured are my two favorites that were shared with the table yam fries and pumpkin creme brûlée. Katie – we need to get your blow torch off the bleachers and back into the game!
