Update on the to-do list

January 23, 2011

Yay! I am on the productive high of conquering the two most avoided points on my to-do list.  As you may remember from my last post, here is the list of things I want to complete by Wednesday:

Mail the long overdue certificate thing (a long lingering remnant of Grad School) Done and done!

Return rain boots purchased online that I didn’t like Okay technically I still need to drop these off at the Post Office cause I missed the Saturday noon cut-off time, but they are all packed up and ready to go

Write Thank You cards for Graduation presents I still need to hunt down one address, but the notes are written, stamped and ready to go.

Write rough draft of church’s Insurance Policy (or more accurately my church’s decision NOT to purchase building or liability insurance) Thanks to my decision to skip the second half of church (yes I realize there is a bit of irony there) I finally found the time and space to write up the rough draft and send it to our pastor.

Call approximately 5 people about Wilderness Wind planning committee This was by far my post dreaded item on the list, due to my keen interest in NOT calling people I don’t know in order to ask them to do things, but I left 3 messages, talked to 2 people and got 1 maybe and 1 YES!

– Get my hair cut (Seeing as the last time this happened was April 2010, I am a little overdue) – Didn’t accomplish, but at 7pm on Monday I will do this

– Pack – Not done, but thought about

– Visit a kitten with my housemate who is thinking of adopting – This may happen today, but it may get pushed back till after Seattle, because our prospective kitten has other folks interested as well.

– Drop my car off at the mechanic to finally get the power steering belt issue (i.e. whatever makes my car squeal when I go around corners) fixed – Plan to do tomorrow after work

– Go with same housemate to Best Buy to look at laptops.  She is contemplating a purchase and I volunteered my nerdy services – Also planning to do this after work on Monday

Write up agenda for Common Life meeting on Sunday morning and then lead said meeting. The meeting went well this morning and I even wrote up the notes and already sent out the minutes.

Okay, now I am off to do a combination of putting together the house puzzle while others watch the game, taking a nap, cleaning room, reading  my book, or perhaps baking some bread.  I hope you all have wonderful Sunday afternoons!

Sometimes it gets pretty darn cold

January 21, 2011

This morning I experienced a new phenomena in the catalog of “Fun Things about Chicago Winters!” and that was having my eyelashes freeze.  Thanks to -3 degree weather, the scarf (the second of the two I was wearing) wrapped around my face, and the condensation of my breath, Jess pointed out to me in the carpool that my eyelashes appeared to have frozen.  Fortunately for me my eyes were open at the time, so no emergency warm water was required.

In other news, I have a busy week ahead of me before I leave on a Trip! To! Seattle!.  Yes, I may not have mentioned here, but I am combining a three-day weekend, one personal day and one sick day to carve out a time to go visit my friends in the cloudy (but warmer!) Pacific Northwest.  Of course standing between myself and that lovely occurence are the following things.

– Mail the long overdue certificate thing (a long lingering remnant of Grad School)

– Return rain boots purchased online that I didn’t like

– Write Thank You cards for Graduation presents

– Write rough draft of church’s Insurance Policy (or more accurately my church’s decision NOT to purchase building or liability insurance)

– Call approximately 5 people about Wilderness Wind planning committee

– Get my hair cut (Seeing as the last time this happened was April 2010, I am a little overdue)

– Pack

– Visit a kitten with my housemate who is thinking of adopting

– Drop my car off at the mechanic to finally get the power steering belt issue (i.e. whatever makes my car squeal when I go around corners) fixed

– Go with same housemate to Best Buy to look at laptops.  She is contemplating a purchase and I volunteered my nerdy services

– Write up agenda for Common Life meeting on Sunday morning and then lead said meeting.

There I think that mainly covers it, but hopefully come Wednesday evening at around 7pm, I will be safely on my flight and leaving all of this behind.

Catch-up Post*

January 14, 2011

So this past weekend was my long awaited Graduation Day! And wow, did the whole weekend ever live up to my expectations. Of course any time my brother and parents come into town, is a pretty good indication that fun will be had by all. But in addition to that I completed Giant Chapter o’ Life, threw (and enjoyed) a great open house, reunited with one of my favorite (and hilarious!) cousins (twice this year already!), saw a friend from Junior High, ate yummy Thai food with said family and generally had a blast.
Here are some pictures to illustrate said weekend:

The exact moment I received my long awaited (and approximately $30,000) diploma

Sadly enough completing my masters was no help in figuring out how to wear the fancy (and not lime green like I had been led to be believe!) hood.

Jonathan of course had other ideas about how I should wear the hood.

But on the bright side, I also got these nifty sleeves on my robe in which I could store things like graduation programs and kleenex (not for being overcome with emotion, but more to do with a runny nose).

Now both my Mom and I both have Masters and with Charletta getting on board in June, that will be women of my family 3, men of my family 0 (but give Jonathan a few years and he will claim first doctorate of the family).

And of course what is graduation weekend without custom-made pirate eye-patches made out of Jonathan's highly additive magnetic ball kit. It should be noted that I promised my Dad not to post this picture on Facebook, but I figured if I through in an equally goofy one of myself I could get away with posting it here 🙂

*now with pictures!

5 things I like

January 4, 2011
  • Despite having to wake up in the dark, by the time I leave for work, the sun is up with lingering sunrise behind it.
  • My family’s professional grade self-portrait
  • Skype
  • Oddly enough, routine.  I think I like to envision myself more as a free spirit who enjoys following random whims, but in the end, returning to a routine (arrival, desk time, break time, circ time, lunch time, class time, shhing time, come home from work time, cooking time, supper time, friend time, bed time) feels like a good thing.  Now if only I could find a way to work from 9 to 4 instead of 8 to 4, I think my world would be rather perfect.
  • My new journal.  But by new journal ,I mean one that Jess was going to throw away and I rescued.  I have never gotten into regular journalling.  Much of my life ends up recorded here and the bigger things end up either staying inside my head or getting hashed out with friends.  However I read this post and got inspired to start a new journal on my own terms.  So far it contains a lot of to-do lists, some notes from a business call and a quote from Tolkien, but I think my new shiny pen is also helping 🙂

2010: Some Statistics and interesting facts

January 1, 2011

Books I read this year: 126 I think this number is somewhat inflated due to the large number of picture books/children’s books and graphic novels that I read, but still I am pretty proud of this.

Pictures I took this year (according to Flickr): 1431

Blog Posts I wrote: 81

2010 or the year I…

… started the last of the set of checks I ordered my first few months of living in Chicago

… took my final 5 classes, student taught and graduated from Library School

… traveled 46 hours by train from Chicago to Seattle

… first took on a major leadership role at my church and encountered the big ups and downs of that action

… joined my first Executive Board (What up, Wilderness Winds)

… quit my first real post-college job and was rehired to the same job 3 months later

And to finish it up, here are some other posts I have written to sum up a year or welcome a new one:

January 2010

January 2009

January 2008

Also I decided to make three New Year’s Resolutions this year:

1. Visit my cousin Emily

2. Bake Challah bread in a round for communion

3. Vacuum my room

and lo and behold I met them all today so I am scott free for the rest of the year! Go me! 🙂
